Convince your boss you should work from home

It seams like I’m a one trick pony with all my Web Worker Daily posts, but  this article by Dian Schaffhauser lists the best talking points to convince your boss to let you work from home and does it so well.

Working from home as a virtual worker isn’t for everyone, but I’ve been enamoured by the concept for years.  I think finally technology is stepping in to make virtual workforces a reality in everyday businesses.

Promote Your Passion: Personal Marketing

Over dinner and drinks, a mentor laughingly remembered a marketing promotion from my days in real estate sales.

You see, while I was in college and a couple years after, I was a residential real estate broker in Greensboro, NC. As a “farming” technique, I sent introductory notes with magnetized business cards to all of my college’s faculty. To this day, dozens of Guilford College faculty probably still have my face plastered somewhere in their office.

While I laugh at it now, the personal nature of marketing myself as a Realtor taught me a valuable lesson. Sometimes, particularly in the real estate industry, personal marketing can be seen as annoying, but to me it’s simply an efficient way to communicate with friends, family, or the general public. That’s really all marketing is: thoughtful communication to an audience with a bit of polish. That’s why I have this blog. That’s why I love “web 2.0″ technologies and the business enhancing possibilities they hold. It’s a way to share your passion.

My passion is in facilitating communication through info systems or marketing messages. Yours may be something completely different, but share that passion and share what’s important to you with the general public in some way. Call it personal promotion; call it marketing. Whatever it’s called, it feels good to do.

What Gen Y wants from work

Web Worker DailyHere’s another great story from webworkerdaily.com’s guest writer Ryan Healy. He takes a look at what generation Y workers want from their work and how they are changing the employee / employer dynamic. Topics: remote work locations, entrepreneurship in standard business structures, and the freelance mentality.

What Gen Y wants from work

*Update: I got an email from Ryan. He’s actually visited my alma mater, Guilford College. That’s a nice surprise. Keep up the good work Ryan.

20 Ways to Use Linkedin Productively

Linked inI’m a big fan of webworkerdaily.com even thought i’m not technically a “web worker.” They don’t disappoint in this write-up on 20 Ways to Use Linkedin Productively.

I must admit, since signing up for Linked in, I haven’t found much use for it. The site isn’t very intuitive, and the way they charge you for a premium membership just to send some messages seems archaic by my social web standards. Maybe this article will help me, and others out there to utilize it as a true business tool.

Someone who does use it well is my friend Brett Sloan @ Accounting Business Advisors. He’s a genius at using it to distribute and collect information. I keep meaning to ask for some pointers
